| This very rare multi Balanocrinus specimen would make a spectacular addition for the serious collector of UK Crinoid fossils. The fossil displays four heads, all with stems attached. One of the stems has its cirri attached in situ. The detail throughout is superb with particular emphasis on the crinoid's pinnules. To find one single crinoid head from this locality is rare but to find four on one block is extremely rare. These animals used to be rooted to the sea floor or attached to pieces of driftwood. When feeding their long arms would wave in the water and the pinnules would trap floating plankton and manoeuvre the food particles down towards its mouth which lies in the centre of its head. All in all a stunning fossil. Approximately 190 million years old. |
