description |

This partial headshield is from an old Victorian collection and was discovered circa 1889. The detail on the white bony edge is incredible for a 405 million year old fish! Asteroleptis was a trout sized detritivorous jawless fish. It was a member of the Osteostraci, one of the most advanced sorts of Palaeozoic armoured jawless fish. The fish itself has been preserved in a course red sandstone nodule. The patina on the head shield is lovely. The specimen was rescued from an English south coast university after the geological department closed down. Afterwards it resided in the late GORDON WAKDEN collection. One for the discerning collector of very rare UK fossil fish. |
