description
This amazing skull has been preserved in a hard mudstone nodule and has been prepared using an acid technique to reveal all the delicate skull bones and teeth inside the creature's jaws. Bone material of this calibre from this world famous fossil locality is extremely rare and highly sought after worldwide. The detail on the skull area is sublime especially the eye plates. The ring of strengthening bones around the eye of the Ichthyosaur indicates it was capable of diving to considerable depths in pursuit of its prey. It is very rare nowadays to find bone material of this calibre at Lyme Regis. This fine specimen was discovered in 1997 after high tides and a severe storm. A chrome display stand is included with this item. Approximately 200 million years old.
